1. If your brand sucked before Facebook, it will suck on<\/i> Facebook<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mark Zuckerberg can\u2019t make your brand fascinating if it\u2019s not. \u00a0No one can. In fact, if your brand is boring, social media will only amplify that. \u00a0So what to do?\u00a0 Well, fortunately you can<\/i> make your business worthy of attention but it means going back to the very genome of your brand and asking a simple question; \u201cwhat do we give the world that it can\u2019t get elsewhere and why should anyone give a damn?\u201d.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t answer this question, you have a problem that social media can\u2019t fix.\u00a0 If you can answer the question, there is hope. \u00a0Read on.<\/p>\n

2. Business will never get less<\/em> social than it is right now<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Anyone anticipating that at some point everyone\u2019s just going to get sick of all this connectedness and unplug for good, is deceiving themselves.\u00a0 This is only the beginning.\u00a0 Social networking will continue to further embed itself in every aspect of our lives and bring new brand\/consumer dynamics we can\u2019t even currently comprehend.\u00a0 And privacy? Privacy is just a commodity we trade for value (real or perceived).\u00a0 Are we right to be concerned about privacy?\u00a0 Certainly we are, but it won\u2019t force us back in time and it absolutely won’t force us offline.\u00a0 We can\u2019t un-see the future and there\u2019s no going back on social.\u00a0 It\u2019s here to stay.<\/p>\n

3. If you have to hard-sell your boss on the value of social media, find a new place to work<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Honestly, if \u00a0– with Twitter being a part of almost every newscast, the Facebook logo on every TV ad and department stores merchandising clothes according to what\u2019s popular on Pinterest \u2013 you\u2019re still having to stand on your head to get your boss excited about social media, you\u2019re working in the wrong place.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t get it by now, they simply won\u2019t\u2026ever. Go work somewhere that actually gets social, likes it and wants to do it.\u00a0 Your old company probably won\u2019t be around much longer anyway. Run don’t walk.<\/p>\n

4. There is no such thing as a social media campaign<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Do you campaign to get your spouse to love you?\u00a0 Of course not. You do little things each day \u2013 nice things \u2013 interesting things.\u00a0 You listen, share and give\u2026 everyday.\u00a0 It\u2019s not always fun.\u00a0 Sometimes it feels like work but you do it, because it\u2019s rewarding and gratifying over time! It\u2019s mutually fulfilling. In other words, you commit over the long haul.\u00a0 And this is precisely why so many brands are disappointed with social marketing.\u00a0 They don\u2019t commit to the day-in-day-out work it takes to build relationships.\u00a0 They believe that one crafty video, contest or podcast and the ROI will just start pouring in.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t work that way.\u00a0 In fact, for all your hard work, the only ROI you may ever get is that your brand might<\/em> still be relevant five years from now.\u00a0 But that\u2019s worth something too right?<\/p>\n

5. The world doesn\u2019t need another Facebook page<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2026or Twitter feed, or Pinterest account or any other social media fodder.\u00a0 But it does need content infused with ideas, stories and beliefs that are moving, entertaining, enlightening and artful. Don\u2019t start a social media account unless \"Get<\/a>you want to (and are capable) of giving these things – even in some small way – \u00a0to the world.\u00a0\u00a0 This does not mean you have to be YouTube\u2019s answer to James Cameron \u2013 just that you have a position and a voice, and that you can express both with a degree of skill. \u00a0Trust me, someone out there will like you\u2026they might even love you.<\/p>\n
